Each year, I update this post to honor and recognize Earth Day. This poor planet we live on struggles to survive from the pummeling it endures – most of it caused by humans.
Earth Day is April 22. It focuses on the state of our planet and sustainability. I employ Earth Day as a metaphor for the words we use in our business writing (or any form of communication).
Even our business communication appears under attack. Whether from artificial intelligence (AI) or diminishing civility, damaged words scatter across our channels of communication, threatening sustainability.
Have you thought about what footprint your business writing will leave behind? After all, the online version lasts forever. This updated post thinks about business writing from a sustainability viewpoint and how we breathe life back into our words.
Your Business Writing Footprint
Sustainability is about survival. For our planet, it is often measured in terms of our ecological footprint.
- Our footprint is the amount of land and resources we consume.
- It gauges our impact on the environment.
- And evaluates its effects, like climate change.
The 2026 Earth Day has over 10,000 planned events. For those who are interested, this post also updates the link to 2026 Earth Day activities.
So, with the metaphor planted firmly in place, let’s review the sustainability of business writing.
Picture your business writing as your own Earth Day. What can you do to leave a better footprint?
Tread Lightly for a Better Business Writing Footprint
Earth Day focuses on reducing our ecological footprint. It builds awareness of what that means and how each of us can make a difference.

Love this, Cathy – and said so economically, too! 😉
Thanks, Sharon. Maybe I should change the site’s color to green. 🙂
I’ve done several environmental science projects, and the concept of ecological footprint has been very useful for me in both evaluating my own behavior and that of others, including organizations, companies, and governments.
I really like the analogies you created for businesses. Good job!
Thanks, John. I want to be you when I grow up. 😀 Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
This is great. I especially love the part about walking and exercising. It really helps your writing.
Thanks, Wally. I totally agree.
