Site Visitors

Overview

SSB collects information that is not personally identifiable, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. The purpose for collecting the information is to better understand how SSB visitors use this site.

SSB may report on this non-identifiable information, but only in an aggregate form, to discuss trends or other observations. In addition, SSB collects (or may collect in the future) potentially identifiable information for website visitors, such as the following,

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • IP addresses

The purpose and use of such information is discussed in this policy notification. SSB does not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties other than the information described below.

Certain visitors to SSB choose to interact in ways that require SSB to gather personally-identifying information. The amount and type of information depends on the nature of the interaction, as detailed below.

Visitors can always refuse to supply personally-identifying information. Choosing to do so may prevent them from engaging in certain website-related activities, such as receiving updates to comments.

What, How, and Why Information is Collected

Comments

When visitors leave a comment on this site, SSB collects the data shown in the comments form. Also collected is the visitor’s IP address and the browser’s User-Agent (UA) string. The UA identifies the browser, its version, and which operating system is used.

The collected information is used to help detect spam, or other potential forms of misuse. Comments and other content submitted to Akismet anti-spam service are not saved unless they were marked as false positives. In that case, SSB stores the comments long enough to avoid future false positives. Refer to Akismet’s Privacy Policy at https://automattic.com/privacy.

If you use the Gravatar service, a hashed value of your email address may be used. A hashed value transforms a string of characters (like your email address) into a different value. Gravatar is also one of Automattic’s websites with the Privacy Policy at https://automattic.com/privacy.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Subscription Forms

SSB uses a third party email marketing service, Constant Contact, for visitors subscribing to tips and other emails generated by SSB. The email marketing service collects and processes all data entered into the subscription form.

The collected data is used to manage your subscription preferences and to email you the content you requested.  You can unsubscribe from the requested emails at any time by clicking on the “Unsubscribe” link shown at the bottom of the emails.

SSB may offer multiple email options. You can change, add, or unsubscribe to any email or combination of emails at any time. Refer to Constant Contact’s Privacy Center at https://www.constantcontact.com/legal/privacy-center.

Contact SSB Form

SSB collects all data entered into the Contact SSB form and forwards that information to this site’s owner email address. That data may include your name, email address, your message content, and any additional information you share through that form.

Cookies

A cookie is a set of data that a website stores on a visitor’s computer. Cookies are used to remember limited data pertaining to visitors.

For example, if you leave a comment, cookies help identify your name and email address so you do not need to enter that information every time you comment on SSB.

If you do not wish to have cookies placed on your computer, you can set your web browser to refuse cookies before using the SSB website.

Analtyics

SSB uses analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, to better manage the site, monitor traffic, and determine how the site is used. Posts on SSB may include embedded content, such as videos, images, or articles. Those websites may collect data about you and your use of those links.  SSB provides the links for your convenience but does not review, control, or monitor the privacy practices of websites operated by others. It is recommended you review the specific site’s privacy policies regarding the use of your information.

How Long Data is Retained

If visitors leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. The reason is so SSB can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on this site (if any), SSB stores the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
