To Blog or Not to Blog

by | Dec 22, 2010

Google blogging tips and the results total 13 million.

Are there any new tips left?

Tips include —

  • How to create a blog
  • Blogging tips for beginners
  • Making money with your blog
  • Business blogging tips
  • And on and on

There are 30-day blog challenges to get you blogging more and endless advice on how frequently you should post.

Now, A-list bloggers are saying – Enough!

So Which is It?

Findings from the 2010 Social Media Marketing Industry Report include —

  • Blogs are the fourth most-used form (70%) of social media
  • That’s down from 79% in 2009
  • Twitter (88%), Facebook (87%) and LinkedIn® (78%) are #1, #2 and #3
  • Blogs are at the top of the list (81%) for increased social media efforts

In the last two weeks, no less than three A-list bloggers ran posts about putting too much emphasis on blogging.

  • They cautioned focusing on blogs instead of the business
  • They warned of blogging becoming a hobby instead of a business activity
  • They rebuked the idea of rigid posting schedules

What about —

  • Posting at least three times a week?
  • Making your blog the hub for all social media?
  • Building your blog adds to your bottom line?

To blog or not to blog — that is the question.

To Thine Own Self Be True

What it comes down to is this — only you know what works best for your business.

I admit it. I was caught up in the blogging noise.

  • I completed a 30-day blog challenge
  • I increased posting from 3 days a week to 5
  • I stressed over posts that were “late”

In a nutshell, I lost sight of my business.

Blogging is a great business tool.

I love offering posts that Keep it simple, clear & uniquely yours.

In the end, however, if you don’t see the business results, as Ghostwriter Dad said —

“…then blogging is a hobby rather than a business activity.”

I think I needed to hear that.

My goal in 2011 is doing a better job at evaluating results of my business activity.

  • That may mean fewer posts
  • But, hopefully posts with more value
  • And more time for reports and other tools

The great thing about the New Year is the sense of a fresh start.

What plans do you have for your business? How does blogging fit in?

Hmmm… interesting… makes sense that blogging is becoming more routine. I think that’s what all this means… now, I want to turn blogging into my business…

    Hi Anne:

I love blogging and will probably spend more time on my personal blog.

My business blog is intended to offer business writing information and hopefully supports my business, which is business writing. I just think I need to be a bit more strategic on that end.

    Thanks for stopping by, Anne.

Hello there … I’ve struggled with this one for a while, until I finally took the plunge into the blogosphere, fairly recently. I think now I have to decide whether this will be a personal blog where my friends can turn to when they need to find out what’s going on inside my head, or a business oriented space. (The thought of having more than one blog is pretty overwhelming!).

However, I’m glad that I’ve started a blog while I’m not too sure of its direction as of yet….Thanks for the post! Happy holidays!

Ahlam_ Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I think I am going through the same process. I’d love to spend more time on my personal blog and wonder if my business blog is all it should be.

I guess we both are still trying to find our voice. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

    Happy holidays to you, too.
