Is New New Email-Social Media Report Life-Changing?

by | Dec 20, 2010

No, that is not a typo in the heading.

It’s a play on the recently released report, The New New Inbox – How Email and Social Media Change Our Lives.

The report captures feedback regarding the effect of email and social media.

  • 1,000 business professionals participated
  • They came from a broad range of industries
  • Results are broken down by —
    – generation
    – personality type
    – function
    – company size

The Really New

Pierre Khawand, CEO of People – On the Go and author of the report, explains how the internet replaced email as the “new” inbox.

The New New Inbox is a combination of social media and email.

You name it – social media connects us more than ever –

  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn®
  • YouTube
  • Social media groups, bookmarks, and so on

The author cites the opportunities of connecting with millions of people with the challenges of being overwhelmed with information.

Who hasn’t felt overwhelmed with too much information?

New New Key Findings

The demographics for the participants in the report show —

  • 47.2% Generation X (born between 1961-1980)
  • 40.7% Baby Boomers (1946-1960)
  • 9.9% Generation Y (1981-2000)
  • 2.2% Senior (1922-1945)

Here are some of the key findings found in Chapter 3 of the report.

  • Email is not dead – despite reports to the contrary, email usage outweighs social media 3 to 1.
  • Social media is on the rise – I know – you didn’t need a report to tell you this; however, an interesting observation was the conclusion that —

“…today Social Media is misued and contributing little to productivity and business results.”

The results show one of today’s dilemmas for human resource (HR) professionals –

How do businesses handle the non-work-related use of social media?

  • The New New Inbox threatens to shrink the bottom line – the high incidence of workers interrupting work to check Facebook, Twitter, etc. poses a very real problem in the direct cost to the companies.
  • Opportunities exist for tools – HR professionals need technologies that help manage interruptions and streamline use.
  • Social media eliminated the division of personal versus business use – nearly 72% of respondents use social media for both work and personal reasons – often merging the two networks – while creating other divides —
    • between generations
    • between functions – e.g., sales and marketing tend to have higher use of social media
    • between different-sized companies – smaller companies generally adopt social media more readily

Whatever side of the New New Inbox you are on, social media should be on your radar as it changes the way businesses communicate.

How has social media use affected your business?
