Okay, Boomer, You Like Your Digital Life, Too

Boomer Digital LifeWhat a difference a decade makes in our digital world. And not only for younger generations.

The baby boomer generation is rockin’ its own digital life.

In 2010, a Pew Research report focused on internet usage, including:

  • Generating email, joining social networking sites
  • Seeking health information, obtaining news
  • Buying products, doing online banking

In its 2019 report, Pew researchers examine the technology used to get there.

The Boomer Digital Life by the Numbers

Millennials are first in line when it comes to technology. However, the boomer and Gen Xer are lining up, too. I created the infographic below from the 2019 Pew report findings. Frankly, I was surprised the boomer numbers weren’t higher.

Because definitions vary, the following describes Pew Research’s version of the generational categories.

  • Millennials born 1981 – 1996
  • Gen Xers born 1965 – 1980
  • Boomers born 1946 – 1964
  • Silents born 1945 and earlier

Okay, Boomer

If you are online at all, you have probably witnessed this recent generation battle. No?

Okay, boomer.

The latest internet meme ignited from a 2019 Tik Tok video of a man criticizing millennials and Gen Zers.  Okay boomer morphed as a dismissive response by younger generations to an “out-of-touch” generation.

As a card-carrying boomer, I find the furor and arguing over its true meaning baffling. And, at times, very amusing.

Relax. Appreciate our differences.

Business communicators dissect marketing reports in an attempt to understand what customers want. But, do we let our preconceived notions get in the way?

  • Could there be a market in older generations for your product or service?
  • Do younger technology visionaries have a time-saving solution for your long-established business?
  • Can understanding digital differences improve your business communication for better results?

Obviously, this boomer thinks so.

Has this ever happened to you?

  • You’re looking for an answer to a business problem
  • You hop on your favorite search engine to explore your options
  • The site you settle on has some great ideas – they just might work!
  • Then you go to the About page and find a picture of a senior-looking owner
  • Or one who could be your child
  • You quickly exit the site

Okay, boomer.

Imagine if the generational blinders we wear, instead direct our focus on individual value. Click To Tweet
