Is LinkedIn InMaps a Useful Tool or Just Another Toy?

by | Jan 31, 2011

LinkedIn® released a new toy for those who love all things techie.

InMaps is a visual tool for mapping your network connections.

  • You need at least 50 connections
  • At least 75 percent of your profile must be completed
  • You can share the results
  • You categorize the connections

So, I thought, what the heck —

I gave InMaps a shot.

Another Pretty Face?

The good thing about the LinkedIn® tool is it’s certainly easy to use.

The bad news ?

  • For me, I don’t know that it told me anything worthwhile
  • I had some trouble when hovering over certain parts of the map
  • Some of the images kept popping in and out like a bad strobe light
  • One pretty batch of circles defied labeling

I did like the visual of me being the center of the universe.

I would say Thumbs Down on this one.

What do you think?

Have you tried the new LinkedIn® tool?

I wonder if this is what made the IPO.

Well, it’s good for entertainment purposes. 🙂

What is the stated purpose of it anyway? Seems a little weird.

    Hi Lori:

It is supposed to help you better understand the relationships and promote referrals, etc. I’m just not seeing it. I agree-weird.

    Thanks for stopping by, Lori.

LOL, Jan! I agree it’s pretty, but I don’t find it particularly helpful. Yes, I can load a contact list, but the User Agreement will not let me share contact info. without the contact’s approval.

    Thanks for stopping by, Jan.

Cathy, Once SQF has a Network established…I can see where that would be helpful. Through the LinkedIn Network as it grows the foundation can use the list to update members on pertinent information. You think?

    Hi Jan:

I have always been a fan of LinkedIn. You can use Updates for quick messages or to link to blog posts or post announcements in Groups (either Groups you join or one you create). It’s all about networking so it’s important to not come off like a person just pushing your agenda.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, Jan.
