The 411 on Social Bookmarking

by | Dec 23, 2010

The number of social media platforms is often overwhelming.

One area that I have not gotten around to is social bookmarking.

  • Are social bookmarks a must-have?
  • Which ones do I choose?
  • What exactly do they offer?

On the cusp of a New Year, we explore new things.

Let’s explore social bookmarks.

What are Social Bookmarks?

Like placing a bookmark in a book, bookmarking saves our place.

Most of you have probably bookmarked a favorite web page for future use.

Social bookmarking is the same idea — only you want to let others in on what you found.

  • You save bookmarked pages for sharing
  • You use a site that can be accessed by others
  • The bookmarks are typically public
  • You can also share them with a limited group

Bookmarking Etiquette

In social media, there is activity that is frowned on.

For example, in LinkedIn®, spammy marketers are definitely frowned upon in the Groups function.

Then again, spammy marketers are frowned upon in most areas.

Bookmarking your own writing is frowned upon.

  • Let others share your content
  • Use social bookmark icons to encourage readers to share your content

Why Use Social Bookmarking?

There are several good reasons for using social bookmarking.

  • Boomer Brain Syndrome – okay, maybe this just applies to me, but if you read a great post, article or how-to, and you tend to forget where you read it when you want to reference it, social bookmarking helps
  • Save the Earth – instead of printing that helpful article, save a tree and bookmark it
  • Get Organized – you can organize large amounts of information without leasing a storage unit
  • Get on the Same Page – you can share bookmarks with others

Some other benefits of using bookmarks include —

  • Search engines create great indexing from the links
  • It creates increased traffic when readers access your content
  • It creates backlinks that builds your search engine ranking
  • It increases your online visibility

What are Social Bookmarking Sites?

Now, that’s a question that could take all day to answer.

There are hundreds of these sites. Here are just a few.

Squidoo has a nice, long list of sites that you can access here.

Now the real big part is figuring out which sites to join.

Not all social bookmarking sites are created equal.

Check out the sites to get a feel for the community and the written and unwritten “rules.”

If you have recommendations, please share them in comments.

Once you have selected the site(s) —

  • Create a profile – use the same attention to this profile as you would other social media platforms
  • Submit your favorite posts/articles
  • Tag your submissions with keywords so others can find them
  • Use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn® or other social media platforms to invite others to read your submissions

I really would love to hear your thoughts. What sites do you like and why?
