LinkedIn Volunteers Space for Your Cause

by | Sep 14, 2011

A notification from LinkedIn about their newest feature – Volunteer Experience and Causes – arrived the same week as Nicky Parry’s guest post about volunteering.

I always knew Nicky was on the cutting edge.

Volunteering has been a valuable part of my life and I hope you have experienced the joy it brings. Now, LinkedIn gives you a platform to share what matters most to you.

Here is a quick video to show how to add this section to your LinkedIn profile.

LinkedIn Volunteer Experience & Causes

Volunteer activity adds value to profiles for –

  • Individuals looking for work
  • Individuals without extensive work experience
  • Or individuals with gaps in their employment

It is also another way to share a bit of yourself in your networking.

I have met more than one client through my involvement with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

What do you think?

Should volunteer activity and causes be included in your social media profiles?

I think it is a great idea to include volunteer work you are involved in in your social profiles. It shows you care about others and therefore care about your customers as well.
For an prospective employer it shows you are good at time management in that you can juggle work with community work.

Hi Danny: I totally agree. I think it is a positive all the way around and, for me, the return is much greater than what I put in. Thanks for sharing your view, Danny.

LOL! I am? I heard about this a few days ago, but much as I’d like to, I can’t pretend it had anything to do with my recent post! For the same reasons as you mention though, I too think it’s a wonderful idea that we can now add these activities to LinkedIn profiles. Plus, it’s a nice way for employers to just see a different side to some applicants as they sift through various people. As an aside too, I am always heartened to hear of companies who allow workers to take a day each month or so to go and volunteer. I wish more work places were advocates of this.

Nicky, of course you are – even if you don’t know it! 😀 I’m with you on companies allowing the time. It’s all about total well-being and that has to include the health of the community. Thanks for commenting, Nicky.
