Business Writing That Takes You From Whining to Smiling

by | Sep 7, 2011

Look around social media and what complaints do you hear over an over?

  • What do I write about?
  • All the change is overwhelming

At the risk of sounding like Little Miss Sunshine –

Turn those complaints into solutions.

You can become the hero of your customers and have endless business writing ideas, too.

How?

Write about what you don’t know.

Endless Ideas

Think about it.

  • How many new products are on the market?
  • How many times does Facebook change a feature?
  • When’s the last time you saw a list of free online tools?

It happens all the time, doesn’t it?

  • That’s part of what makes it so overwhelming
  • You want to learn about new products/services/tools
  • But, who has the time?

If you are feeling that way, so is someone else. So, make that your business writing idea.

Here’s three simple steps that take you from whining to smiling.

A Simple Business Writing Plan

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a step back.

What works for me is jotting down ideas or Things To Do. Use that same method to get started on your business writing ideas.

#1 – Create your What I Want to Learn list

  • List new products you want to test drive
  • Add new software tools you’ve been meaning to explore
  • Include changes/features of social media platforms

Whatever you would like to learn about – write it down.

#2 – Pick one and write about it.

You have your list. Before you start hyperventilating about its length, remember you only need one idea.

  • Close your eyes and point
  • Pick the one that interests you most
  • Alphabetize the topics and start at A

It doesn’t matter how you pick your topic, just do it.

Consider it your new assignment and find out everything you can about it.

  • Go to websites
  • Review tutorials
  • Read reviews
  • Try it yourself

Now, write about it.

 #3 – Repeat step 2

How simple is that? You don’t even need to learn a new step. And when you run out of ideas on your list –

Repeat step 1.

Practice What You Preach

I am a big believer in practicing what you preach so I’ll take up this challenge.

  • I’ll create my What I Want to Learn list
  • I’ll pick one and write about it
  • I’ll repeat step 2

My assignment starts next week.

This week I’m off to San Francisco to cheer on my teammates who are walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure.

Some of those crazy ladies are doing both San Francisco and San Diego (the Walk I’m doing in November) – 60 miles in 3 days – sounds overwhelming, doesn’t it?

But, it starts with a single step.

Kind of like business writing ideas.

How about you? What steps are you taking?

Cathy, you’re always so positive and upbeat! Your comment about the “overwhelming” is spot-on though. It’s easy to be so overwhelmed by everything that you end up procrastinating & doing nothing. The “overwhelming” for me is that my list of what I want to write about is too long, and I’m freelancing by moonlight, so that combination can leave me feeling a bit like the deer in the headlights sometimes. But as Nike keep telling us: “Just Do It”! We’ll look forward to your assignment 🙂

Hi Nicky: Thanks for the kind words. I am in awe of moonlighting individuals. I simply don’t know how you do it. And you do it so well!

I had my list as part of my goals, but found I was procrastinating, so this post helps give me a well-deserved kick in the rear. Now I know you’ll be watching. 🙂

Thanks, as always, for stopping by, Nicky.

These are such great tips, Cathy! Article marketing and blogging are 2 of my favourite methods of marketing online so I love reading about ways to get ideas on what to write…and I definitely noticed that the more I write about topics, the more I learn and the more equipped I feel to be able to teach and share information as well! 😀
