Updating blog posts sounds simple. Breathing new life into old content is viewed as good strategy.
What I did not expect when I began updating my older posts was the impact it would have on my psyche.
Updating my blog posts produced an unexpected twist.
Updating Blog Posts
I redesigned this site in 2019. Part of the redesign included updating old posts.
- I had rarely done any updating.
- The site had plenty to choose from.
- And it was an easy way to keep up regular posting.
Blame my boomer brain, but some of the posts I barely remembered. Some made me cringe. Others were a pleasant surprise.
And then the pandemic hit. Along with a tsunami of events that knocked us off our feet. Or at least it did me.
Post Twist
Simply Stated Business is all about better business communication. It is a rare post that focuses on other life musings. I have a personal blog for that (although that site has seen little activity in the last few years).
Updating blog posts continued in 2020. But during that tumultuous year, the way I updated took on a new perspective.
- Try as we may, the personal and business side of life often intertwine.
- How could communication of any kind not comment on the disruption of our world?
- From the global pandemic to political unrest to the culmination of racial injustice, life has forever changed.
Instead of a narrowed focus on better business communication, posts reflected current times.
- How businesses pivoted during a pandemic and how some used it as a customer service excuse
- The disturbing comfort level of individuals who publicly spew hatred and racist feelings on “professional” sites
- And a scary filtering pattern by social media algorithms
A Trivial Pursuit?
I struggle with creating content – both the updated blog posts and the new. Not for a lack of ideas but posting what often seems trivial in the face of today’s world.
The idea for this post began with an update on the Negative Naysayer post.
- At the time, a racist gunned down 10 black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
- A gunman killed one person and injured five others who were attending church in an Asian community.
- And before I could begin writing this post, 19 children and 2 teachers lost their lives to an 18-year-old shooter in Uvalde, Texas.
Somehow grammar, typos, and overused business phrases don’t seem to matter much.
- But helping others does.
- Standing up for what’s right does.
- Listening and learning matters.
Making a living must go on but if we have a different perspective, is that so bad? So, I’ll keep trying to help you create better business communication. But I hope I never close my eyes to what we must change.
Be well. Be safe. Be kind.

==================================
Great post, Cathy. Like you, I’ve struggled with trying to blog or otherwise be on social media and focus on my career and writing while the world seems to be falling apart around us. It’s hard to ignore that, and I agree that maybe we shouldn’t. Thanks for the nudge.
Thanks for the kind words, Maryann. As time goes on, it’s too easy to slip into numb inaction. Probably out of self-defense but then I try to remind myself there is so much more to do.
