One of the hottest posts here was 7 Easy Steps to Remove Personal Information From Spokeo.
Well, dust off the instructions because Spokeo is back at it.
- They didn’t go anywhere
- But, apparently, previously deleted profiles are back on
The last time I found out about this site, I deleted a couple of my profiles and one on my mother. I shared the information with my friends and wrote the 7 Steps post.
Today, I received an email from a friend that said her profile was back up – even though she deleted it.
I checked mine –
- My current address is not posted
- Prior addresses (that I deleted) were posted
I went through the steps again to delete my profiles. I had to use a second email address because, I got this response –
“In order to prevent abuse, we must limit the number of privacy requests per email address.Government officials please use your @.gov email address for priority processing.”
We’re abusing Spokeo.
In January the blog at Forbes reported Spokeo is receiving FTC complaints.
If you want to get really annoyed, read the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) defense of the site that the Forbes blog references.
I especially loved the statement –
“…we here at the BBB have observed that many scams start with a “panic pitch…”
That statement followed the BBB blogger’s dismissal of a sample email circulating around the internet warning people about the information contained on Spokeo.
Like I said in my first post on this topic, I know it’s like closing the door barn after the horse has escaped, but I will continue to delete my profile from this site.
My apologies if you view my two posts as scams that started with a “panic pitch.”
