Mozilla and Skype in a Takedown

by | Jan 24, 2011

Mozilla’s Firefox browser and Skype have separated.

It is not clear if the differences are irreconcilable.

The Players

Mozilla Corporation is the creator of Firefox, a popular web browser.

One of the features of Firefox allows for customization of the browser through add-ons.

Until recently, the Skype toolbar was one of those add-on options.

  • Skype is a software application
  • It allows users to make free video and voice calls over the Internet to other Skype users
  • Skype users can also share files and send instant messages
  • There is a low fee for calling landline and cell phones

The toolbar helps detect phone numbers in web pages and converts it into a button the user clicks on for the call (what the techies call re-rendering).

And, therein lies the problem.

Block and Takedown

There is a bit of a problem between the toolbar and Firefox.

  • Mozilla cites the toolbar as the #1 or #2 top crasher for Firefox
  • According to ZDNet, Mozilla reports 33,000 crashes in one week from the toolbar
  • On January 20, 2011, Mozilla announced a block on the Skype toolbar on Firefox
  • Mozilla will remotely disable existing toolbars, but users will have an option to override it

Skype is recommending an upgrade to fix the problem.

  • For now, the marriage is over, but who knows if counseling will fix the problem
  • Have you been caught in the middle of the Firefox-Skype discord?

For me, I don’t find dialing all that taxing. (Uh, make that push-buttoning – is that a word?)
