Samantha’s business communication frustrated her. Oh, she was proud of the content, but no one noticed it.
Samantha’s friend, Lucy, suggested maybe it was time to get back to business communication basics.
What Are Business Communication Basics?
Lucy’s suggestion left Samantha a bit skeptical. Samantha knew the basics.
- Define your topic.
- Choose your medium.
- Check results.
While that is a good start, business communication basics may be even more basic. Start with Who – What – Did you (as illustrated below).
Future posts expand on each topic but here is a sneak peek.
Communication Basics Start with Questions
#1 – WHO
…ARE YOU?
Before you can share your business, you need a clear picture of who you are. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? However, some business communication stumbles in answering that question.
How did you do the last time someone asked:
What do you do?
This post topic helps you better communicate who you are, what problems you solve, and what is different about what you do.
… IS YOUR AUDIENCE?
I know, this is nothing new. There are reams of information on how you identify your targeted audience. But how often have you seen communication that fails to do that?
- Perhaps the business is trying to be all things to all people.
- Or it may be the business never explored or thought about a specific audience.
The related posts identify different audience levels and how to learn more about them. The series also touch on how you encourage your audience to care about what you offer.
… IS AFFECTED?
Who is affected? Are you wondering what the heck that means?
Imagine you are a rock star when it comes to knowing your audience.
- You know who they are
- What they like
- And you deliver it
But have you ever thought about who else your business communication affects? Intrigued?
Stay tuned for a few thoughts on those affected and what tools you can use for better business communication.
#2 – WHAT
… IS YOUR PURPOSE?
We will go through themes that define the purpose of your business communication. Expect some tips and resources throughout.
#3 – DID YOU
… DELIVER
The proof is in the pudding, as they say. What good are all the ingredients if the final product tastes terrible?
The final post of the series offers tips on the mechanics, the miscues, and ideas for improving your business communication.

Cathy, I’m looking forward to another year of your excellent advice!
Thanks, John. I appreciate your ongoing support. 🙂
These same questions help when writing articles, Cathy. Know the market, know the audience, know what’s relevant and why. Do that, and you reach the right people with the right information.
Thanks for your perspective, Paula. Business communication for any market. 🙂
Happy New Year, Cathy!
Your posts are always so well done, I find I WANT to read whatever you have to say, so keep it coming.
I wish you the best and look forward to this year’s work:) Thanks.

Happy New Year to you, Sue-Ann! Thank you for your kind words. I look forward to chatting with you throughout the year and to hear your ideas as well. Wishing you all the best! 🙂
There’s a corollary to this.
When you think you’ve got it- run it by two people first. If they look at you like you just landed from Mars, you need to refine what you thought was perfect. Sorry to burst your bubble, but we all have that problem from time to time. (We know what we mean, yet don’t always convey it so clearly.)
Absolutely, Roy. I’m often reminded how imperfect I am. 😀 Like an editing buddy who spotted my typo – no matter how many times I ran right over it. 😉
Should be fun, Cathy. Looking forward to it.
Thanks, Anne. I hope that’s true. 🙂
