Do you have management responsibilities?
- Are you working with a lean staff?
- Maybe the staff is just you.
- Do you have stalled projects?
- Need help getting them completed?
The answer is simple – hire a freelance business writer.
Okay, so I’m a bit biased on the subject.
But, if you hang in there with me, I bet you find an idea or two to use.
So, let’s get er done.
Not So Unusual
A post at Peter Bowerman’s Well-Paid Writer blog inspired this post.
Peter explained how commercial copywriters (business writers, freelance business writers, whatever you want to call them) can help with unusual projects.
You may use a contracted writer for your “usual” business writing.
- Articles – ghostwritten or bylined
- White papers
- Case studies
- Advertising
- Web copy
But, have you thought about all the other writing you do? The writing your staff does?
It’s easy to become overwhelmed by all the content you need to make your business successful.
Professional business writers thrive on content writing. Some are experts in a specific niche, and may have worked in your industry.
The right business writer moves projects from stalled to completed.
The following are 7 ideas that may be ideal for hiring a freelance business writer.
#1 – Create a training manual
How many times have you wished you had a training manual?
- One for new employees
- Perhaps a procedure manual
- Or a how-to for your product(s)
Trying to create one yourself or delegating to that lean staff often puts the project in terminal hold.
The singular focus of the freelancer puts the project back on track and helps get er done.
#2 – Develop training courses
Has a training course been on your To-Do list forever? Somehow, you never find the time you need to get er done.
Find a business writer who takes the course off the back-burner and turns it into your next hot product.
#3 – Simplify a legal or technical document
Do you need to share a legal document with employees or a client, but you can’t get past all the herewiths and pursuant tos?
Maybe it’s the latest version of healthcare reform’s Affordable Care Act or some other too-techy document.
The right business writer can simplify the legalese into language you understand – even better – language your employees or clients understand.
#4 – Create speaker notes
You know your business inside and out. But, do you panic when asked to do a presentation? Or to put one together for your boss? If only you had a script.
Consider hiring a professional writer who transforms your expertise into pearls of wisdom.
#5 – Develop dialogue
And speaking of scripts – some businesses have a need for original dialogue.
- Video games
- Training videos
- Reenactments
- Commercials
Dialogue is tricky. You want it sounding natural. If you have a need for that kind of script, think about hiring a professional writer.
#6 – Responding to a Request for Proposal (RFP)
Businesses seldom think of using a freelance business writer for responding to a Request for Proposal (RFP).
When you think about it, an RFP is a sales letter on steroids.
- You share the features of your business
- But, you focus on the benefits for the prospect
- You want writing that makes your business shine
RFPs are time-consuming and deadline-driven. If anyone understands the urgency of deadlines, it’s a freelance writer.
If you have a long-time relationship with a freelancer or one who understands your business, think about hiring your writer to respond to the next RFP.
#7 – Outsource operations projects
Talk to your operations manager – or the head of customer service.
Ask your managers what projects they are working on.
- It could be one of those training manuals
- Or developing new forms for auditing
- Or crafting a client report
Balancing the day-to-day operations with outside projects is difficult.
Outsourcing those tasks to a business writer delivers multiple benefits.
- Managers can focus on improving operations
- Reports are comprehensive and well-written
- Projects are completed more quickly
Doing It the Write Way
The explosion of social media and content marketing opened the world to small and large businesses alike.
Today’s business is not business as usual. So, the next time you consider your business writing needs, think the unusual.
There could be a freelance business writer who is perfect for getting er done.
Writers – what unusual writing projects have you worked on?
Business managers – have you had success hiring a writer for non-traditional writing projects?
Please share your examples in Comments.

Amen. Cathy, thank you for reminding clients that we can provide not just a value, but a time savings (possibly even a cost savings). With the case of the training manual, in particular, clients can get their employees up to productive speed quickly, saving both time and money. And if it can be written, a professional writer can get it done while they get on with their daily business.
My pleasure, Lori, even if it is a bit biased. 😉 But, I really believe there are projects that a freelance business writer could get out of limbo land and completed to deliver real results. Your comments on training manuals is a perfect example.
Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts, Lori.
