Has the most simple form of communication – your voice – been lost?
If not for the popularity of videos, we might never know the voices of some people.
Momma – Pick Up the Phone
I am sure some will dismiss me as just another baby boomer, longing for the “good old days” when we actually spoke to one another – you know – simple communication.
Since there is a kernel of truth in just about every statement, I admit I sometimes miss hearing the voice of a friend or family member.
Our first hint of our lost voice happened when email came on the scene as an early social media platform.
I remember sitting in my Dilbert-styled cubicle when my computer dinged with an email message. A client? No, it was my cubicle bunkmate, just over the cubicle wall.
Did a sign hang on the cubicle wall, If you can’t see them, they’re not there?
Honey – Read My Wall
I am constantly amused by the number of spouses I see communicating to each other on Facebook walls. I guess you could say, “At least they’re communicating.”
The real kicker for me was the column I read in today’s paper. It is one of those Ask for Advice columns. It was from a mother who heard from friends that her son had been taken to the hospital. What was her daughter-in-law’s excuse? She put it on her Facebook wall.
Simple Yet Powerful
I love the technology that has evolved. I love that my mother got her first computer at age 85, and as a result, keeps in touch with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I really do.
Sometimes, however, I just need simple communication – no tweets, posts, wall-writing, email-sending messages, but the simple sound of your voice.
How many times have you been angry over an email message or other from of social media communication? Then you find out that you totally misinterpreted the message.
Without the sound of the voice, our messages can’t carry the tone or inflection that communicate our intention. It’s simple, but powerful
The Moral of the Story
I am a strong believer in communication – in all forms. But, there are times when you just can’t replace the most simple form of communication – your voice.
Let me know your thoughts. And it’s okay if you want to write them down in comments. We’ll talk later.

I feel this way about all the texting I see young kids doing. How can they sit next to each other and text messages back and forth? Wouldn’t it easier to talk? Thanks for bringing up a really good point!
Another great example, Sherrie! I am glad I am not alone.
